Reaching Each Generation Where They Live Online

Getting in Tune with Tech

At Hagan, we believe the heart of effective marketing is pretty simple: meet your audience where they already are. The right place, right time, and the right person. Today’s generational divides in tech habits and app usage offer plenty of opportunity for brands to do just that. Whether you want to share your brand with trendy Gen Z or steady Baby Boomers, knowing where they are is the first step in that process.

What the Data Tells Us: App Preferences by Generation

Let’s start with the basics. According to YouGov and eMarketer, younger generations like Gen Z, millennials, and even some Gen X most often download social media and music apps. Messaging/email and gaming are not far behind. Baby Boomers most often download weather apps, followed by social and messaging services.

Drilling down further, 69% of Gen Z have downloaded social media apps, 58% have music apps, 54% have gaming, 53% have entertainment, and 43% have photo or video tools. Boomers have lower numbers in these categories.

Gen X falls somewhere in between, with messaging/email (55%), shopping (52%), weather (51%), and music (55%) topping the list according to YouGov Business.

The takeaway here is that social, music, gaming, and entertainment apps are fair game for Gen Z and millennials, but if your priority is to connect with Boomers or Gen X, leaning into practical apps like weather or shopping may yield better results.

Beyond Apps: Gen Z’s Digital DNA

Gen Z isn’t just using apps, they’re living through them. eMarketer notes that Gen Z spends more than 6 hours a day glued to their phones, making them a uniquely immersed audience. This translates into a media consumption style that favors user-generated content, algorithm-curated feeds, short-form video, and multi-platform engagement. Basically, being always online and ready to jump from one screen to another.

Reddit’s also a rising star for them: logged-in Gen Z Reddit users in the U.S. are growing fast, projected to climb from 26.1% now to 40.1% by 2028.

Adding Strategy: Right Place, Right Time, Right Person

What does all this mean for brands? Here’s where marketing uses both art and science.

Gen Z & Millennials: Prioritize social, streaming, short-form video, Reddit, music/gaming apps. These groups are particularly engaged where entertainment and community meet.

Gen X: Use a mix of practical app placements (like weather, shopping) plus select social platforms to reach them both efficiently and meaningfully.

Baby Boomers: Lean into utility-first spaces like weather, news, and shopping. Think simple, practical, and straightforward.

Timing matters, too, especially for Gen Z, with their multi-screen habits and short attention spans. Reaching them in snackable, mobile-first moments is key.

How Hagan Takes It Further

We stay media-agnostic at Hagan, pulling the best tools for your goals, whether that’s a Spotify ad binge, Reddit thread takeover, or in-app weather banner. Our job is to match your brand to your people where they scroll, swipe, gamify, or even check the daily forecast.
